Vurugu I Recap: How Oga Obinna's Celebrity Boxing Franchise Was Born at Kasarani

Vurugu I was the debut edition of Oga Obinna's celebrity boxing and live music spectacle, staged at Kasarani in Nairobi and produced by Obinna TV Studios. It set the template for the franchise: real exhibition-style bouts between Kenyan public figures, DJ sets and live musical performances between fights, and a paid live stream on OBINNA TV.

What Vurugu I was

Vurugu I paired internet-famous personalities, comedians and musicians in sanctioned exhibition bouts inside a full arena production at Kasarani. The word vurugu is Swahili for chaos — a deliberate nod to the loose, entertainment-first tone the promoter was going for.

Why it mattered

Two things stood out. First, it proved there was a Nairobi audience for a Misfits Boxing-style celebrity fight night. Second, it gave Oga Obinna and Obinna TV Studios a fully owned live event property they could scale — which is exactly what happened at Vurugu II at Sarit Expo Centre six months later.

What came next

Vurugu I's success set up Vurugu II on 20 June 2026 at Sarit Expo Centre with SportyBet as presenting partner, and the promoter has since referenced a third edition. See our Vurugu 3 preview for everything that's known — and rumoured — about the next card.
